Hi, Adriano Owlfinch here.
I’m doing extra training in remedial and sports massage, and I need people to try my new skills on! While I’m training, I’m offering individual massage treatments for anyone willing to help me practise what I’m learning. Only £25 for a 90-minute session, to help with costs.
While I’m still learning the advanced techniques of remedial/sports massage, I’m already qualified and experienced in holistic/Swedish, deep tissue and prenatal massage and I’ll be using many of those same techniques, so you’ll be getting an upgrade on my usual treatments at a fraction of the cost.
It’s an opportunity to take a targeted approach to helping with pain, injury recovery or health conditions. That being said, don’t feel you have to have a condition in order to benefit! All are welcome provided massage is safe for you (so please do tell your friends).

Where/when will it be?
Not in our couples massage room in the Alma Vale Centre, but rather The Clifton Practice on Whiteladies Rd - you’ll be helping me test out a new space as well! It’s a lovely clinic and there’s the possibility of a parking spot as well, if you’re driving. A space costs £2 extra and they’re limited, so they have to be booked in advance.
Timings are TBC, with availability likely to be on some Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons.
What’s included?
A session always lasts 90 mins, and includes:
-
Approx. 15 min consultation
-
Approx. 15 min postural observation
-
Approx. 50 min massage treatment
-
Approx. 10 min feedback and aftercare advice
Will anyone be watching, or accessing my data?
It’ll be just the two of us. I’ll ask you to sign a data use agreement, the key point being that if I need to share the write-up of your session with my tutors it will always be in anonymised form (without your name and contact info, which I store separately and securely).
Here’s the full agreement in case you like legalese:
In accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), I consent to my therapist creating and storing records concerning my remedial/sports massage treatment, including details of any medication and health conditions. My therapist may use these details to communicate with me as required. I understand that these records will be retained for eight years after the end of our treatment. I confirm that I have stated all my known medical conditions and I will inform my therapist should anything change regarding my health status. I understand that all information gathered for this treatment is confidential and I will be asked for permission for release of any information to another healthcare practitioner. I understand that the remedial/sports massage treatment carried out is by a student. I will allow my notes to be used for academic purposes by The Bristol College of Massage & Bodywork provided full confidentiality and anonymity is implemented at all times. As a client, I am allowed to withdraw this consent at any time.
Does sports massage hurt?
Not the way I do it! In my deep tissue work my focus is always on working with your body, not against it, and this is the same. That’s the philosophy of my training too: “no pain, much to gain!”. Together we’ll access and relax the relevant tissues, whether they’re superficial or tucked under layers of muscle and fascia, always taking the time to sink in as the body allows it, rather than forcing it. No bruising, no “I just got beaten up” feeling at the end of the session, and I’ll be using your feedback throughout to adjust the pressure so it’s both effective and comfortable.
Do I need to be an athlete, or have an injury?
Not at all. All our bodies go through things day by day, whether that’s movement and strain or a lack of it. In fact, sedentary lifestyles quite often bring their own postural stiffness and pain. Even if you’re at the absolute peak of physical, mental and emotional health, it’s still helpful for me to work with a range of different people and bodies. I may also ask for your autograph, because you might be unique!
What if I do have an injury or condition?
That’s especially valuable for me to practise with. All are welcome, provided massage is safe for you (if you're unsure please check this list of contraindications or contact me in advance). You’ll fill a health questionnaire prior to your massage and I’ll adapt it as needed to support your healing.
What does a postural observation involve?
Please arrive wearing a vest-type, strapless or strappy top - if you don’t have breasts and are happy to remove your shirt, that works too. I’ll ask you to remove any extra layers and stand in a relaxed way while I take a look at various joints and make some notes. I’ll also palpate (technical word for “feel with my hands”) the muscles around your shoulder blades, neck, collarbone, and hips. I won’t be judging your posture or giving you a load of homework to fix it, it’s just extra information to inform your treatment.
I’ve had a massage with you before - how will this be different?
The consultation might be more in-depth, you won’t have had a postural observation with me before, and I’ll be looking to find one (or perhaps two) focuses for your treatment. It’s less likely to be a case of full-body relaxation while you drift off, and more likely to involve communication while I hone in on thoroughly releasing specific areas of pain and tension. My goal is still to make it pleasant and relaxing for you even if we’re taking a more remedial approach - my roots are still in my holistic training, and I aim to work with the body and mind to support your system’s natural healing.
